Kraljeva Sutjeska

Arriving in Kraljeva Sutjeska feels like stepping through a time warp. As the industrial areas of Kakanj disappear as you near this tiny, ancient village with its large Franciscan church and monastery one will find well-kept houses, gardens in perfect shape and the reflection of the sun off the water is caused by the white stones and not a discarded can. The Dusper House in the village is the oldest house in central Bosnia, dating back to the early 18th century. The house has been designated a protected national monument.

Restoration has not yet begun but the house can still be visited and is an impressive example of authentic Bosnian architecture. One of the oldest mosques in Bosnia and Herzegovina is situated at the entrance of this village. It was built in a few days only, and has never required any maintenance since - or so the story goes. The mosque and its wooden minaret are open to visitors. You’ll enjoy the (local language) accounts of its past, told proudly and with a twinkle in the eyes by the lady who maintains this beautiful little place of worship.

Kraljeva Sutjeska
Kraljeva Sutjeska and the citadel at Bobovac were once the seat of two Bosnian kings, Tomas and Tvrtko, of the Kotromanic Dynasty. The last Bosnian queen, Saint Katarina, is mourned today by the local townswomen who still wear black scarves as part of the traditional dress. When the Ottomans conquered the fortress at Bobovac, Queen Katarina either fled or was exiled to Rome, never to return to Bosnia. It was reported that her children were taken to Istanbul, where her son converted to Islam and became a major figure in the Ottoman administration.

Bobovac
Place that hold court of the Bosnian monarchs in the 14th and 15th century

With primarily defensive and strategic significance, Bobovac was providing an efficient protection to the Bosnian monarchs, from Banus Stjepan II (1322-1353) and king Tvrtko I Kotromanic (1353-1391) up to Stjepan Tomasevic (1461-1463). It was built, as many other towns throughout Europe, in few phases, more than one century (early the 14th century – the first decade of the 15th century), Bobovac had 1100 metre of a defensive wall 100-150 cm thick, the Bosnian-royal court and four palaces,
out of which three were part of the court, town gates, church buildings, capitals, finds of a fresco painting and diversity of the handicrafts, church bells, royal mausoleum that stress the sacral and cultural character of the entire ensemble , with its striking eleven towers that witnessed about its eminent european identity and quality of life.
By its primary purpose, way of architectural realization, and especially by its prominent political significance that crossed the borders of the Bosnian medieval state, Bobovac reached the same role and function that Stolni Biograd (Szekesfehervár) and Višegrad had for the then Hungary. The common archetype was Aachen of Charlemagne with cathedral and palace that was used as a model of the capital that expanded throughout the medieval Europe. Political function of Bobovac reflects in the fact that inside its walls was guarded the Bosnian crown due to which, in the early 15th century, in attempt to get hold of the crown, Sigismund Lexembourgian, at that period the most powerful European monarch, payed a visit to this fortress.
Bobovac was occupied by Ottoman in May 1463, what characterized the end of its political glory as the capital of the Bosnian Kingdom. On 6.11.2002. Ancient Monuments Bord of BiH proclaimed the historical area of "Mediaeval Town Bobovac" in the national monument of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Monastery – History (1385-1890)
To be translated: Prvobitni samostan je podignut najvjerovatnije u prvoj polovini 14. vijeka.

Monastery church (1385-1905)
To be translated: Sličnu sudbinu kao i samostan imala je i crkva, posvećena sv. Ivanu Krstitelju.
